Description
I consider myself very lucky to be living in Portal, a tiny community on the east side of the Chiricahua Mountains, located in the southeast corner of Arizona. The Chiricahuas are widely considered to be the premier birding area in all of North America. It's at the northern limit of many birds that are common in Mexico and Central America, and probably the most sought-after bird is the Elegant Trogon. Trogons are only found here in the US and in a few other "sky islands" southeast of Tucson, and with few exceptions only from mid-April to August, when they return south. Their calls are quite distinctive, and I came upon this male Trogon while hiking along South Fork in Cave Creek Canyon in May 2016. I used the Canon 7D MK 1 and EF 500 f/4 L IS USM lens with a 1.4x teleconverte, handheld and shot in RAW, and the camera exif is ISO 400, f/5.6 @ 1/125 second, with a focal length of 700mm.
