Description
The cristate or "crested" saguaro is formed when the cells in the stem of a saguaro cactus grows outward instead of in the usual circular pattern of a normal cactus; the result is the growth of a large fan-shaped crest at the growing tip of a saguaro's main stem or arms. There are approximately 3,000 crested saguaro, more if you count other types of cacti that are also crested. I took this photograph at southern Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument with the Canon 7D MK II and 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens; the camera exif is ISO 200, f/8 @ 1/250 sec with an exposure value of -1/3.
