Artist's Description

While volunteering at our local Cave Creek Canyon Visitor Info Center a birder came in and said he'd passed some people who said they'd seen a male Elegant Trogon in Cave Creek Canyon; it's the signature bird of SE Arizona's "sky islands"; it comes across the border from Mexico to breed in certain canyons here. Well, I just had to find out the ground truth on that as this was on December 10 and they should have been long gone by now, so the morning after the report I took off up the trail, heard only a Flicker and a few Mexican Jays, figured things were a bust -- then I saw a flash of green up in the trees. Steve Wolfe

The "great outdoors" has always been an important part of my life, even though I was born, raised and have a mailing address in Los Angeles' busy port town of San Pedro. I worked at a Kaiser hospital for 34 years, then retired in 2013 at age 56 and hit the road, living in my travel trailer; I’ve been on the road now since June 2013 and plan to keep on living with no fixed address for at least another 2 years. I spend most of the daylight hours hiking and photographing with either the Canon 40D DSLR and...
