While volunteering at our local Cave Creek Canyon Visitor Info Center a birder came in and said he'd passed some people who said they'd seen a male Elegant Trogon in Cave Creek Canyon; it's the signature bird of SE Arizona's "sky islands"; it comes across the border from Mexico to breed in certain canyons here. Well, I just had to find out the ground truth on that as this was on December 10 and they should have been long gone by now, so the morning after the report I took off up the trail, heard only a Flicker and a few Mexican Jays, figured things were a bust -- then I saw a flash of green up in the trees. Holy Moly, there he was -- and here he is, in about the best light you can get it in, where his tail turns into a coppery gold, and that's exactly what they were originally called, "Coppery-tailed Trogon". The "great outdoors" has always been an important part of my life, even though I was born, raised and have a mailing address in Los Angeles' busy port town of San Pedro. I've hiked the country lanes and paths of Great Britain, bike toured thorough Europe for 6 months, backpacked in the Sierra Nevada, and "truck camped" around the western US for weeks at a time, taking in the scenery and places of solitude. I worked at a Kaiser hospital for 34 years, then retired in 2013 at age 56 and hit the road, living in my travel trailer; I’ve been on the road now since June 2013 and plan to keep on living with no fixed address for at least another 2 years.
