Description
While volunteering at our local Cave Creek Canyon Visitor Info Center a birder came in and said he'd passed some people who said they'd seen a male Elegant Trogon in Cave Creek Canyon; it's the signature bird of SE Arizona's "sky islands"; it comes across the border from Mexico to breed in certain canyons here. Well, I just had to find out the ground truth on that as this was on December 10 and they should have been long gone by now, so the morning after the report I took off up the trail, heard only a Flicker and a few Mexican Jays, figured things were a bust -- then I saw a flash of green up in the trees. Holy Moly, there he was -- and here he is, in about the best light you can get it in, where his tail turns into a coppery gold, and that's exactly what they were originally called, "Coppery-tailed Trogon". I took this photo using the Canon 7D MK II camera with a Canon 500mm f/4 MK II lens and a 1.4x teleconverter. Shot in RAW and handheld, the camera exif is ISO 400, f/8 @ 1/350 sec with a focal length of 700mm.
